American Deafness and Rehabilitation Association (ADARA) Conference
March 17, 2005
Orlando, FL – Over 350 people are anticipated at the American Deafness and Rehabilitation Association (ADARA) conference, to be held May 26-29 at the Renaissance Orlando Resort at Sea World in Orlando, Fla.
A staggering list of conference activities include a golf outing, a Deaf Authors table where participants can interact with Deaf authors and have books autographed, and presentations/workshops, are just a few of what attendees can choose from. Especially interesting are the plenary sessions, which feature speakers such as Chuck Tompkins, vice president of animal training at Sea World. Another keynote presenter is Dr. Jerome Hanley of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, who will present, “Jerome, are you crazy – Deafness as a part of cultural competence?”
Sunday will see John Evans with Washington State Vocational Rehabilitation discussing the value of differences and what it means to be Deaf in America.
There will also be three pre-conference sessions. “At past conferences, Deaf professionals asked for the opportunity to develop their skills to improve their chances for promotion and career development,” ADARA 2005 Conference Chair Steve Larew explains. “ADARA will offer two pre-conferences, each six hours long, in that area. One will focus on grant writing, and the other will focus on conflict resolution. The Gallaudet Leadership Institute will co-sponsor the conflict resolution workshop with Dr. Richard Lytle.” The third pre-conference, presented by Steve Sligar and Barry Critchfield, will focus on assessment of low-functioning deaf people, offering practical information for service providers.
