Bailiffs and Plaintiffs and Judges! OH MY!
Parts 1 & 2
June 4, 2005 and August 6, 2005
9:00am - 3:00pm
Presented by:
Rita Dennis

Like Dorothy and Toto, interpreters facing the legal system can feel like they have landed in a strange and wondrous land. Who are all these people? What is this odd language they speak?

This 2-part seminar is designed to help the new arrival along the winding path of the "Legal Yellow Brick Road." Learn such things as:

· The difference between Civil and Criminal systems

· Roles of the various court personnel

· The process of a Criminal case from arrest through trial

· Courtroom protocol for the interpreter

· RID Code of Ethics and the Legal system

About the Presenter:

Rita K. Dennis earned her CSC from RID in 1979. While she has had a wide range of interpreting experiences, Rita has been intensely involved in legal interpreting for the past eleven years. In addition, she has interpreted law school and CLE (Continuing Legal Education) courses. Rita has taught in the interpreter training programs at St. Petersburg Junior College and the University of South Florida. She has served as a mentor for interpreting students, as well as working interpreters. In 2002, Rita was chosen by the National Council of Interpreting (NCI) to serve as a Content Expert for the development of the new certification test. After 25 years as a private practitioner, she joined the staff of Sign Language Associates, Inc. in July 2002. Rita has been married for over 30 years and has one adult daughter.
