ASL Interpeters Wanted for Shadow Theater
December 21, 2009

The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with The PlayGround Theatre and VSA Arts of Florida, is seeking American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and professional stage actors for its new “Shadow Interpreted Theatre Program for Children & Families.”

Shadow Theatre utilizes specially trained ASL interpreters who perform as “shadows” during a live stage production alongside voiced actors. The Shadow Actors are integrated into the performance by mirroring the voiced actor(s) on stage, while interpreting the character in American Sign Language. Click here for a detailed explanation of how Shadow Theatre works.

The Department of Cultural Affairs is seeking applications from sign language interpreters interested in becoming shadow interpreters (Shadow Actors and Shadow Directors). Selected Shadow Actors and Shadow Directors need not be professional actors or interpreters, but must be proficient in American Sign Language. The Department also welcomes applications from theatre professionals who are interested in this program to observe the training workshops.

The Department of Cultural Affairs intends to create a professional pool of trained Shadow Actors and establish this offering as the first of its kind in Florida. Selected Shadow Actors and Shadow Directors will be paid for their participation in the training workshops and will have an opportunity to audition for paid parts in one or more staged performances. Individuals attending as “Observers” will not be compensated.

Training for the Shadow Interpreted Theatre Program will take place 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM on January 21 and January 22, 2010 (attendance for selected interpreters on both days is required). Selected participants will be notified by January 7, 2010.

DEADLINE: To apply, please complete and submit the application for Shadow Theatre by 4:00 PM Monday, December 21, 2009. Applications may be submitted by mail, in person, or email.
