The Miracle Worker
February 21, 2006

Performed by:
Orlando Repertory Theatre
Select performances interpreted by ASL Services, Inc.

This stirring dramatization of the story of Helen Keller is one of the most successful and warmly admired plays of the modern stage.

Blind and mute, nobody knows what Helen's fate might have been had she not come under the tutelage of Annie Sullivan, an Irish girl who was born blind. The Miracle Worker is principally concerned with the emotional relationship between the lonely teacher and her blind charge. Little Helen, trapped in her secret world, is bitter, violent, spoiled and almost animal like. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind waiting to be rescued from that dark, tortured silence. Annie's success with Helen comes only after some of the most turbulent and emotion-packed scenes ever presented on the stage.

Interpreted Performances:
February 3rd 7pm
February 6th 10:15am*
February 12th 2pm
February 21st 10:15am*
*(school groups also invited to attend)

GOFRID Meeting
December 05, 2005

Greetings Orlando interpreters!

We at GOFRID would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to those of you who participated in our Professional Development Survey. The results of that survey will be announced at our upcoming END OF THE YEAR meeting. We are attempting something new this year…we’re going to have a very short meeting and then kick back and enjoy ourselves.

On Monday, December 5th in the community room at Fashion Square Mall, from 7-9 PM, GOFRID will be announcing the results of the Professional Development Survey as well as hold an election and appointment for two board vacancies. The positions of Vice President (appointment) and Secretary (election) are vacant. We are in the throes of several exciting projects, so we are looking for board members willing to roll up their sleeves and get down to work…but have fun in the process. GOFRID is what we make it!

We will also hold a raffle and host a potluck. Please bring a plate of “finger food” to share….and please bring a non-member friend!! This is a great opportunity to meet other interpreters and to join GOFRID. We’ll have a stack of membership forms ready!

In addition to the festivities, we are taking this opportunity to give something back to our Orlando community. Please bring a contribution for Harbor House, which is a shelter for abused and battered women. They have needs for items such as:
• towels
• food
• twin sheets sets (new) they take these with them when they leave
• ethnically diverse hair care products
• cleaning supplies
• yard work supplies, rakes and such ( keeping up the grounds is part of their stay at Harbour house
• new clothing
• money (of course)
All used items are donated to the Junior League "Bargain Box" from which the displaced women get to shop without charge for any clothing they need. This solves their storage problems and also benefits the "Bargain Box" who supports "Harbour House".

We look forward to seeing you on Monday December 5th for our END OF THE YEAR meeting. If you haven’t completed your survey you still have time! Please take a few minutes to answer the questions and email it back to us by December 3 in order to make your voice heard.

Interpreting for the Deaf Juror
December 10-11, 2005

More and more frequently, court interpreters are called upon to interpret for Deaf jurors in court. Traditionally, most interpreters were provided in criminal matters for Deaf defendants; however, with the advent of legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act more and more jurisdictions are calling on Deaf citizens to perform their civic duty. As a result, interpreters are working in this sub-specialty area more frequently and should be aware of the similarities and the differences between this and other types of court interpreting.

This seminar will discuss the background and history of Deaf jurors, the perception of jury duty from the consumer's perspective and the ethical challenges presented, the perspective of the Deaf juror from the jurors', judges' and attorneys' perspectives, the interpreter's role, function and duties as a jury duty interpreter, and specific preparation strategies for the jury duty interpreter. Participants will be able to practice interpreting orientation to jury service texts as well as other commonly encountered texts during jury service

Pre-Readings:
Participants will be provided with pre-reading materials and are expected to complete all readings prior to the beginning of the workshops. Pre-reading materials will be mailed with letters of acceptance by November 5, 2005. RID CEUs will be available for pre-reading activities.

We have an exciting conference planned and it becomes more exciting when attendance is high. We have keynote speakers who exemplary in their field.

The opening keynote presenter will be Chuck Tompkins, Vice President of Animal Training at SeaWorld. He has co-authored a book entitled "Whale Done" and will be speaking about "Positive Relationships". A man who has worked extensively with killer whales, such as Shamu, does know something about working with people too!!!!

We also have Dr. Jerome Hanley with the South Carolina Dept of Mental Health. Dr Hanley has worked to develop the Deaf Services program in South Carolina and also is a powerful motivational speaker. I am sure you will enjoy him.

Our closing speaker on Sunday will be John Evans with State of Washington Dept of Vocational Rehabilitation. John is a dynamic speaker with a story to tell. He will be speaking about "American with a disAbility".

In addition to the keynote presenters, we will also have three pre-conference workshops. These workshops are priced at $35 for a full day of training. The cost is economical and will allow individuals the opportunity for professional development.

The three pre-conferences are "Finding Funding" with Nancy Carr, Marcia Kolvitz, Nancy Godfrey and Tricia Davis. This workshop will provide extensive information on writing grants and pursuing funding for your agencies.

"Assessment and Beyond" will be presented by Steve Sligar and Barry Critchfield. These two self-described "experienced old farts" will provide information on useful tools and techniques you can utilize when working with persons who are deaf and low functioning. This workshop will provide attendees with information they can take home and use.

The third workshop, Conflict Resolution in the Work Setting, will be sponsored by the Gallaudet Leadership Institute. Dr. Richard Lytle, from Gallaudet University will be the presenter. This workshop will focus on developing positive relationships with persons in the workplace, whether supervisors, co-workers, or consumers.

Please share this information with your colleagues. I hope to see many of you personally in Orlando. It will be an informative and entertaining conference. Registration information and more details can be found on the ADARA web page at www.adara.org

ADARA 2005
May 26, 2005

Orlando, FL – Over 350 people are anticipated at the American Deafness and Rehabilitation Association (ADARA) conference, to be held May 26-29 at the Renaissance Orlando Resort at Sea World in Orlando, Fla.

A staggering list of conference activities include a golf outing, a Deaf Authors table where participants can interact with Deaf authors and have books autographed, and presentations/workshops, are just a few of what attendees can choose from. Especially interesting are the plenary sessions, which feature speakers such as Chuck Tompkins, vice president of animal training at Sea World. Another keynote presenter is Dr. Jerome Hanley of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, who will present, “Jerome, are you crazy – Deafness as a part of cultural competence?”

Sunday will see John Evans with Washington State Vocational Rehabilitation discussing the value of differences and what it means to be Deaf in America.

There will also be three pre-conference sessions. “At past conferences, Deaf professionals asked for the opportunity to develop their skills to improve their chances for promotion and career development,” ADARA 2005 Conference Chair Steve Larew explains. “ADARA will offer two pre-conferences, each six hours long, in that area. One will focus on grant writing, and the other will focus on conflict resolution. The Gallaudet Leadership Institute will co-sponsor the conflict resolution workshop with Dr. Richard Lytle.” The third pre-conference, presented by Steve Sligar and Barry Critchfield, will focus on assessment of low-functioning deaf people, offering practical information for service providers.

American Deafness and Rehabilitation Association (ADARA) Conference
March 17, 2005

For more about the conference, please visit www.adara.org or contact Steve Larew, Conference Planning Chair at grcdirect@aol.com

(FCCDHH) will be holding its public hearing at the Hilton Tampa
Airport Westshore in Tampa, Florida on Thursday, January 13, 2005
from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It was established through legislation
passed last year following the submission of a report from the
Governor's Working Group on the ADA that had formation of such a
group as a priority recommendation. The FCCDHH is tasked via
legislation to submit a report to the Governor and legislative
leaders regarding accessibility of state agencies and public
entities to persons who are deaf, hard of hearing and late-deafened
and to provide policy recommendations.

We strongly encourage any and all of you to participate in the

Law Enforcement Interpreting
December 4-5, 2004
New and exciting developments regarding interpreting in law enforcement settings have occurred during the past few years that competent ASL interpreters should know and understand. Courts are scrutinizing the work-product of ASL interpreters who are hired to assist the prosecutorial side of criminal cases more frequently and more critically than ever before. State v. Hindsley, the landmark Wisconsin case, is a prime example of the pitfalls that exist for ASL interpreters who accompany law enforcement to interrogate Deaf suspects. Contemporary socio-linguistic research into a suspect's assertion of his Constitutional right to an attorney during the Miranda process and the court's view of that assertion as either powerful (direction) or powerless (indirection) language (and thereby effective or ineffective respectively) exists with which every interpreter working in law enforcement settings should be familiar. Deaf interpreters, as well, are being called upon more and more frequently to take on the responsibility of ensuring the suspect's constitutional rights at interrogation are protected. Deaf interpreters and hearing interpreters must possess the ability to make a defensible argument for 1) the necessity of their work, 2) the accuracy of their work, and 3) the integrity of their work. Are we ready?

This fast-paced seminar presents a balanced mix of theory and hands-on practice for trained Deaf and hearing court interpreters. This seminar will focus on the interpreter's role and responsibility in interpreting in the law enforcement setting. The information presented will include critical description of the constitutional underpinnings of a suspect's rights in a police-citizen encounter, the law of privileged communications, the ethical duties of the law enforcement interpreter, the evidentiary requirement of authentication of prior interpreting work, the concept of testifying with respect to the content of a prior interpreted event, text analysis and extensive interpretation practice and analysis of interpretations.

ALL participants must have completed an introductory course on court interpretation within the last ten (10) years. The course should have been one intensive course of at least 24 hours of instruction.
