Presented by:
Carla Mathers

This seminar is designed to present an initial discussion about court and legal interpreting by focusing on assignments that may appear to be community assignments but which have legal overtones. The seminar will delineate and define legal interpreting as distinguished from court interpreting. The seminar will describe the prerequisites that a generalist interpreter should possess prior to interpreting in court or other legal settings. The class will set forth the concepts that form the building blocks for accurate and ethical court and legal interpreting. The seminar will explore the roles of court interpreters, as sculpted through case law decisions and selected ethical provisions that affect the court interpreter’s role. The participants review, discuss, analyze and role play situations based upon the information presented. The roles of the proceedings interpreter, the table (monitor) interpreter and the witness interpreter will be examined, studied and practiced through mediated small group work.

This workshop is for those preparing for the NIC Performance. It can also be very beneficial for any interpreter needing training on the Code of Professional Conduct. The interview has been viewed as the hardest part of the test. Do you know some interpreters with phenomenal skills who have actually failed? The interview could very well be the reason why! When answering ethical dilemmas, we may know what to do but how do we answer on the test in order to get the maximum points? Come find out! Come learn to be a Master from a Master. You will be taught proven methods to help you ace the interview portion of the performance! Countless interpreters who have learned this format have gone on to receive HIGH ratings on the NIC. Many have been awarded a NIC: Master!

Here are what some of those interpreters are saying:

I took my test on June 6th, 2009. Three weeks and a day later I received
my results...a NIC: Master! I absolutely could not have done this
without Shonna's workshops or her continuous support and encouragement.
Her workshop works and is worth every penny. I recommend this workshop
to anyone and everyone who wants to pass this test. The workshop is fun,
energetic, exciting, and far from what you would expect from a workshop.
I studied her format and applied it to my test, and the end results were
evident that her format and what she does is the real deal. I cannot
thank Shonna enough for what she has done for me!

James "Dalton" Amici
NIC: Master (FLORIDA)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The attainment of the NIC Master is a definite possibility for the professional interpreter. The information and materials presented in Shonna's two day Master the NIC workshop provides an excellent preparatory foundation for the Interview component of the Performance exam. The workshop includes numerous opportunities for independent and group study, one on one Q & A, and allows for in depth discussion of the features necessary to obtain a moderate to high level test ranking by a rater of your performance.

Mark Motyka

NIC: Master (ILLINOIS)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The interview is such an integral part of the NIC process. Shonna's "Master the NIC" workshop definitely played a huge part in preparing me for the interview portion of the test. It's also a great way to brush up on the CPC, even if you are already certified. Highly recommended!

Jessica Hicks

NIC: Master (MICHIGAN)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really didn't know what I was getting into until I went to Shonna's
workshop. It was a stimulating, challenging and eye-opening experience.
I left with a comprehensive understanding of not just the NIC
Performance test, but the Interpreting profession as a
whole. Shonna's passion for excellence in professionalism rubbed off
on all of us. I am confident that if it wasn't for that I would have
never passed the test, let alone reach Master level. Follow her system
and you will get results, it's just that simple!

Alex Restuccia
NIC: Master (FLORIDA)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I [first] took the NIC performance, I hadn't taken Shonna's
workshop, and received a passing score at the NIC level. After taking
Shonna's workshop, I decided to test again to see if I could get a
higher score, and I passed with a NIC: Master! Shonna's approach for the
interview obviously works like a charm! Thanks for everything, Shonna!

Mary Anne Lattimore
NIC: Master (FLORIDA)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shonna Pareja is the kind of person whose motivation and passion will greatly impact your life, she is she kind of interpreter whose wisdom and insight will influence the community of interpreters and cause a positive change, she is the kind of mentor whose teaching and discipline will cause you to grow and learn, and she is the kind of friend whose smile will encourage you and whose presence you will simply love. Now, ask me how I know!!!

P Lanette Pinkard
NIC: Master (MICHIGAN)

President/CEO of My Hands Your Heart, LLC

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shonna's workshop was fun, supportive, direct, and informative. I gained a fresh appreciation for our professional code of conduct and the legal implications of our decision-making. The rubric information for the interview portion was thorough and well-rounded and I felt clear about what was expected by the RID. After Shonna's workshop I felt prepared, confident, and excited to take the NIC exam.

Kathryn Graham

NIC: Master, CI&CT (FLORIDA)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I took Shonna's Master the NIC workshop after having passed the written---and having close to 20 years in the field as an interpreter. I feel like this workshop took those years of experience and helped me to categorize and distill that knowledge into something that was a more clear representation of critical thinking about the ethics of our work, the impact we have on the many people we work with and how we can shape our decisions to result in positive incomes all around. The break down of the domains (the "Pareja Method) was immensely helpful to me and the area where I think many of us struggle when trying to articulate the decisions we make about our work. I would recommend this workshop to both seasoned interpreters and new ITP graduates as well.

Dawn M. Wessling
NIC Master (MICHIGAN)

Foundations of Interpreting in the American Legal System
January 23-25, 2009, Jacksonville, Florida

Presented by Sharon Caserta, Esquire, CSC, SC:L (Jacksonville Area Legal Aid)
& Len Roberson, Ph.D.; CI and CT (University of North Florida)

Interpreting in legal settings is quite different from other interpreting. There are great differences in language, protocol, qualifications, roles and risks. This workshop has been designed for certified interpreters who want to have a thorough introduction to legal interpreting. Through a variety of instructional methods including lecture, small group discussions and interactions, role
play, and case study analysis, participants will gain an understanding of the process of interpreting in the legal system by examining the legal right to an interpreter, the context of legal interpreting, the legal system in general, the roles and responsibilities of the legal interpreter, protocol for interpreting in various legal settings, and the role of preparation for legal interpreting assignments.

(For the Foundations of Interpreting in the American Legal System, participants must hold national certification by RID (either CSC, CI and CT, any level of NIC or NAD Levels IV or V). Deaf interpreters who have working experience as an interpreter may also attend and will need to submit references for recent work experience.)

Interpreting in Florida's Legal System:
A Examination of Best Practice and National Standards
March 7-11, 2009 - Florida Coastal School of Law,Jacksonville,
Florida

Facilitated by:
Sharon Caserta, Esquire, CSC, SC:L (Jacksonville Area Legal Aid)
Len Roberson, Ph.D.; CI and CT (University of North Florida)
Jan Delap, CDI (Maryland) (presenters will include attorneys, law enforcement personnel, judges, etc.)

Designed to be both engaging and interactive, this 5-Day training will examine interpreting in the legal settings with special emphasis on Florida's legal system. Interpreting in both civil and criminal actions will be explored with particular focus on both process and language. A highlight of the training will be an experiential
component that takes participants into real courtrooms to observe legal exchanges followed by facilitated discussions of what was seen and implications for interpreters.

Although facilitated by two individuals, an attorney/interpreter and an interpreter/interpreter educator, during the training, participants will learn from a wide variety of instructors including attorneys, experienced interpreters, law enforcement officers, Deaf interpreters, and judges (to name a few). Topics presented will include:

 Introduction to Florida's Legal System
 Review of the Roles, Responsibilities, and Ethics of Interpreting
 An overview of Preparation Strategies
 Legal Vocabulary (both English and ASL)
 Overview of the Criminal Justice System (including function of the interpreter)
 Overview of the Civil Justice System (including function of the interpreter)
 Witness Interpreting
 Interpreting for Law Enforcement
 Working with Deaf Interpreters

(For the Intermediate Legal Interpreter Training, participant slots are open to those interpreters who hold national certification and who have had prior, formal training an "introduction to court interpreting" of at least 10 hours. Please submit a letter of experience, training and certification along with your registration form.)

March 12-15, 2009 - Florida Coastal School of Law,Jacksonville,
Florida

Part I: Thursday & Friday
Preparation Strategies for Court Interpreters
Presented by Carla M. Mathers, Esquire, CSC, SC:L
Court Interpreter Training Resources & Jan Delap, CDI Maryland

Preparation in legal assignments is more than a good idea, it is the
interpreter's obligation. Court interpreters take an oath to interpret accurately all of the proceedings in court, and if one interprets an assignment without adequate preparation, the oath can be violated. Unfortunately, the Courts and attorneys do not make the interpreter's job easy. This seminar will assist interpreters identify the preparation required for various legal assignments.

Part II: Saturday & Sunday
Mock Criminal Trial: Putting it All Together

Interpreters need practical experience interpreting legal texts. The previous work in this series leads up to the final session in which participants will work as teams in the interpretation of a criminal trial. Participants will have the opportunity to prepare with the parties and attorneys for the trial, interpret and de-brief with the
parties after the conclusion of the case.

(For the Preparation Strategies and Mock Criminal Trial, participant slots are open to those interpreters who hold national certification and (excluding Deaf participants) have taken an introductory course on court interpretation. The course should have been one intensive (at least 20 hours of instruction) course, and to those interpreters trained and experienced in trial work: this must include experience in proceedings interpreting.)

Please note:
 These sessions are open to deaf and hearing interpreters. Deaf
participants do not have to possess a CDI certificate to attend.

 Save The Dates! Seats are limited in each session!

Medical Interpreting Workshop
February 07, 2009

There will be a five-hour medical interpreting workshop by a deaf medical doctor from Rochester, New York this coming February 7, 2009 in Palm Bay, Florida.

Dr. McKee will present an overview of the medical situations (varied locations clinic, hospital and ED) and how interpreters function in each of these varied settings. He will be discussing the importance of understanding why an interpreter needs to understand the goals of the doctor and medical team in addition to medical terminology and procedures in order to be completely effective in the medical setting.

We will have Q and A segment for Mike to share his experiences as a Deaf MD.

Educational Objectives He will:

1) Discuss interpreting for specific situations (ex., high visual patients, children, mental health, situational conflicts and how to handle professionally) The participants will demonstrate a working knowledge of complicated health situations and how to approach each in a professional manner and have a successful outcome.

2) Discussion on being realistic with the seriousness of interpreting in the medical setting. Participants will be encouraged to take a personal analysis of their medical knowledge base, their ASL skills and the emotional fortitude the field of medical / mental health interpreting requires. The participants will be making a personal and private list of strengths and weaknesses for them to take home and build upon. This journaling will continue the self evaluation process and assist to establish personal goals for improvement.

3) Discuss the top 5 diagnoses seen to become more familiar with the common health situations seen at the clinic. We will also discuss important and common medications and family history. We will then compare and contrast the Doctor, the Deaf and Interpreters perspectives and expectations in each step. The participants will be able to demonstrate their understanding of each perspective and expectation by applying it to sample scenarios to better facilitate the interpreting process.

4) Teach English medical terminology and what each word means. They will then have a working vocabulary base from which to take home and build on.

5) Examine the ASL signs and concepts for the English words. The participants will be able to contrast and compare 20 or more ASL signs and concepts with English words.

6) Examine and teach the medically based ASL signs and how to weave them into ASL structure and visual pictures and not just “match” English with signs. The participants will improve their skills in using ASL structure including all the visual information necessary for a complete ASL translation.

To register, go to www.DrSign.com before January 18 for the early bird rate of $35. Lunch will be offered for $6 at the workshop. The link for registration and more information is http://www.prestostore.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?ref=dovesign&ct=59868
